ALBANY 'ROUND THE HOUSES CLASSIC CAR RACE

This sunday just gone, Albany hosted its famous classic car race around the streets of the city.
This penchant for racing your car around Albany's streets has become a time honoured tradition. I'm pretty sure it was me that started it all off way back in '65 when I got my drivers licence. I had a vintage ford prefect ute that the previous owner had painted pink and grey with house paint and brush.
Being young and full of testosterone, confidence and bravado, I would race my 10hp ute against anything that had a reasonable chance of coming second.
So I challenged mainly pedestians and homeless dogs. Mind you, some of those dogs could run.
My car racing blossomed over the years, until one friday night after being out with the boys, I attracted the attention of the local john darms, who were equipped with the latest in taxpayer funded pursuit vehiculars. A 1972 GT Cortina!
I was the proud owner of a 1972 Datsun 1600, complete with black paint outs on the rear and front, wood grained dashboard (special order), after-market wide 4.5inch by 13inch wheels, fitted with state of the art cross ply tyres, and a loud exhaust.

When I realised they were intent on having a pleasant tete a tete with me I decided to do a runner. Albany nestles between two large hills, Mount Clarence and Mount Melville. It was on the latter that I decided to drive up one street to the top, then along to the next street and drive down, then along the highway to the next street and drive up,then along again, turn down the next street etc etc. With the cops at the bottom of the street, and me almost at the top, I thought I had them licked, but they were slowly gaining on me. Finally, in a bid of desparation, I swung into a driveway of an unsuspecting house, and hid. As soon as they had driven past, I backed out and made my way home.
I suspect this became the Albany Classic as it is known today !

Well.......I jest, jest a little bit!

Street racing in Albany,(legal street racing that is), began back in 1936 I believe. You can't quote me on any of these dates, but I've seen some vintage photos of cars with steam coming out of them and cart wheels instead of rubber tyres.
My earliest recollection of the Albany street circuit was when I was about eight or ten years old.
Later, in the 70's the course was changed and included Lockyer Avenue, Middleton Beach road, and Campbell road. Now in more modern times, the cars don't actually race,it's more of a time trial, and as such it traverses the main street,York Street, and meanders thru the city centre. Much work is put in by the various clubs, and this work is rewarded by being a thrilling spectacle for everyone that attends.
The cars are so many, and varied. Somewhere around 160 odd cars turn up, with home made racing cars from the early '30's and 40's.
Open wheeler cars are represented, along with many'vintage' cars of all makes and models, making for some interesting and spirited racing.
The maximum speed allowed is 130kph, but I suspect up the back straight they do a bit more. Let's face it a phase 3 Ford XY with 500hp, on song, would achieve more than that in a quarter mile.
The very tight and twisty nature of the street circuit, does even things out, to the point where a 2 litre car can win over a 6 litre car.
I'm sure a great weekend was had by all.
Roll on 2009!

ALBANY FARMERS' MARKET WINS NATIONAL AWARD !

Two weeks ago our own local farmers market won the Australia wide local produce markets award for the best local market in Australia.
Rather prestigious don't you think. ( I just wanted to use a big word)...you.!
Any way I trotted off down to the markets early Saturday morning to snap a couple of shots of happy award winning stall holders, and their equally happy customers.
I'm there every saturday morning at 8.00AM to grab our fruit and veges for the coming week. There's a fantastic variety of locally grown produce there, and it has a certain...........what's the word.....hang-on... ahhhhhhhhh! ohmbuy-onncce to it.
You've gotta get there quick, 'cause the stuff doesn't hang around long. By mid-day it's all gone, and everyone has packed up and gone their separate ways.
So congrats to everybody that is involved in operating our award winning markets.

SHARK ATTACK !

Albany made the national news last night with the reporting of a shark attacking a swimmer at our beautiful Middleton Beach.

You hear about shark attacks from time around the country, never thinking it would happen in your backyard.......errr, beach.
Middleton Beach is a lovely beach nestled at the bottom of Mount Clarence, and being only a few kilometres from the centre of the city, is very popular.
On saturday morning a regular beach goer was having an early morning swim about 80 metres offshore when he had this 4 metre white pointer single him out for bite to eat.
The news reported that this 36 year old was left with a deep wound to his leg ( not sure which one), and could possibly have drowned had it not been for the heroic actions of a middle aged woman who swam out and rescued him, with no consideration for her own safety.
When interviewed on local TV she was quite non-sho- lont, ( can't be bothered with spell check) about the whole episode, but I reckon she'll be up for a bravery award for sure. She sure deserves one.

TIPPY aka THE BLESSED MONGREL

Here's a photo of my dog that graced our household for 14 years.
He arrived in our family in 1956 and died in 1970.
Tippy is the subject of a book.....well it's more of a manuscript at the moment, that I wrote back in 2002.
I called it the Blessed Mongrel, as he was called this by my father, who didn't exactly like dogs, or animals in general, for that matter.

In the "Book" I describe growing up with Tippy, and for the most part we were inseparable.
As time permits, I will include the odd chapter for anyone to read and appraise.

CRUISESHIP

In contrast to the sleek lines of the QE2, this cruise liner is much larger, with multiple decks that remind me of a live sheep carrier, but there the similarities stop.
No sheep to the slaughter here !

QE2 VISITING ALBANY

Albany was priveledged to entertain the QE2 and her passengers last month when the stately ocean liner docked for the day at the Albany wharf on what was her last voyage before being relgated to a floating hotel in Dubai. (sovereign wealth funds at it again?)
This was the first and last time Albany would play host to this magnificent example of yester-year sea travel, and the city didn't dissapoint.

Fedor Konyukhov Albany Finish

Here,s a photo of Fedor's yatch just after it had crossed the finish line, completing a 14,000km 102day race around the South Pole.
This was the inaugural race, and the organisers are hoping that more entrants will line up next year.

Fedor has circumnavigated (big word!)the world single-handed in a yatch 4 times I think, as well he has climbed Mount Everest and traversed both poles.
Being Russian hasn't stopped him. What a bloke!

His weapon of choice for this race is around 25metres long, weighs 30 tonnes, and has a draught of 5 metres, with a mast 32metres tall. Some yatch!

I like these world clocks
